When I was four years old I sewed together my first quilt. Using my mother's discarded sewing scraps and a large needle with thread, I began attaching the pieces by stacking and overlapping. When I told my mother that I was making a quilt, she stopped her own sewing, began taking out my crude hand stitching, and said, "If you are going to make a quilt, you may as well learn the correct way to make a seam." I was a very eager learner. She taught me how to put the right sides together before sewing. Using three-inch blocks, I finished a very rough 12 by 15-inch quilt top for my doll. Later, she finished it for me by sewing on a back and binding the edges. I loved it. I continue to love it.
Since then I have completed a BA in Art, an MA in Elementary Education, and 35 years of teaching. More importantly, I married, raised two children, gained a daughter-in-law, and have been blessed with three grandsons.
Now is the time to continue the quilting...
Thanks, Mom!
